A rapidly moving cold front moving through the area will bring potentially severe weather to the New York metro region today.

A wind advisory has been issued for the region by the National Weather Service for sustained west winds of 25 to 25 mph and gusts up to 50 mph. The wind advisory is in effect from 12 noon today until 2 a.m. tomorrow.

A dense fog advisory is also in effect early this morning.

Showers and thunderstorms, with potential locally heavy rainfall, are expected this morning. Some thunderstorms may be severe, the weather service said.

A tornado watch is in effect this morning for Nassau County, New York City, western Connecticut, northeastern New Jersey and the lower Hudson Valley

A gale warning is in effect on the Long Island Sound through late tonight.

Temperatures will fall into the lower 50s this afternoon, the weather service said.
