Update — Sunday, June 9: Southold Town Police have identified the victims in yesterday’s plane crash as Robert Mark, 66, pilot and Susan Quagliano, 57, passenger, both of Oakdale.
Original story:
Two people were killed when their single engine-plane crashed in a farm field in Mattituck just east of the Riverhead Town line this morning.
A dog aboard the plane escaped the wreckage and was found by a local farmer, according to Southold Town Police.
The identities of the victims have been withheld by police pending notification of next of kin, police said in a press release this afternoon.
The plane, a single-engine, six-passenger Beachcraft registered in Massachusetts but based in Islip, took off from MacArthur airport at 9 a.m., police said.
The plane was fully engulfed in flames when first responders arrived on scene. Jamesport Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire.
Federal Aviation Administration Investigators took command of the initial investigation, which will be turned over to the National Transportation Safety Board. An NTSB Investigator is currently en route to the scene. The NTSB is the lead investigative agency in this incident, Southold police said.
Southold Town Police, Riverhead Town Police, New York State Police and the Department of Environmental Conservation Police and the Suffolk County Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services also responded to the scene.
