It will be a soggy back-to-school for Riverhead students Thursday morning, as the remnants of Ida are expected to bring widespread rainfall of three to four inches across the area from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

The rainfall should begin to taper off Thursday afternoon, according to the weather service forecast.

A flash flood watch is in effect from 2 p.m. Wednesday through 2 p.m. Thursday.

Deep tropical moisture will interact with a nearly stationary frontal boundary across the middle Atlantic and Northeast to produce heavy rainfall Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning, the weather service said.

This rainfall combined with existing wet conditions may lead to flash flooding, the weather service said.
