Riverhead Police have charged a homeless man with arson in the fire at a Mill Road self-storage facility early Wednesday morning.

Police said in a press release this morning Robert Lazazzaro, 60, intentionally set a fire in one of the storage units at the CubeSmart self storage facility located at 99 Mill Road.

A Riverhead police office noticed smoke in the area of Mill Road and West Main Street yesterday at approximately 1:45 a.m., according to a police press release. The officer investigated and located a fire inside one of the units as well as a man screaming for help outside the unit.

The Riverhead Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire, police said.

The man was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center for a “prior unrelated injury,” police said.

An investigation by Riverhead Police detectives, the Riverhead Town Fire Marshal and the Suffolk County Police Arson Squad, determined that Lazzarro intentionally set the fire within the storage unit. He was charged with one count of Arson in the Fourth Degree and released on an appearance ticket, police said.

Anyone with any information regarding the fire is asked to contact the Town of Riverhead Police Department at 631-727-4500.

Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. A person charged with a crime is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
