To the Editor:
On June 24, 2022, Representative Lee Zeldin, the Republican nominee for governor, said the decision to overturn Roe v. Wade was a victory for family, life and the Constitution. I wholeheartedly disagree, as do the majority of Americans, and particularly New Yorkers.
Republicans have a very skewed vision of what abortion actually is. In their vision, women and men just willy-nilly decide “nah, we don’t want it.” In reality, it is a very complex medical decision best left to a woman and her doctor because it is health care. In Republican-led states like Texas and Florida, abortion bans are all but certain. In some Republican states there are no exceptions for rape, incest or the life of the mother. That is not what New Yorkers want. However, it’s exactly what we will get if we elect a Republican as our governor or end up with Republican majorities in the State Assembly and Senate.
The time is now for women, and men who love and support them, to vote for Democrats up and down the ballot: On Nov. 8, vote for Kathy Hochul for Governor, Skyler Johnson for State Senate, Wendy Hamberger for State Assembly, Chuck Schumer for U.S. Senate, and Bridget Fleming for Congress to send the message that New Yorkers believe in a woman’s right to choose.
