Riverhead Police have charged a 31-year-old Riverhead man with second-degree assault and criminal possession of weapon in connection with an incident that sent a woman to the hospital with cuts to her arms and chest early this morning, according to a police press release issued this afternoon.

Police said they responded to a call about a disturbance at Fairfield Apartments at 1750 West Main Street at 2:52 a.m. today.

The female victim had been transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center prior to police arrival, according to police.

Riverhead Police detectives identified the suspect at Hayden Dixon, 31, of Riverhead, according to the report. He was arrested and charged with Assault in the Second Degree, a class D felony, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree, a class A misdemeanor.

Dixon was arraigned on the charges and released on his own recognizance, police said.

Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. A person charged with a crime is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
