A Riverhead man was charged with felony assault following an alleged stabbing and vehicle-related dispute at a 7-Eleven in Riverhead Monday morning, according to a Riverhead Town Police Department media release.
Police said officers were investigating a complaint about vehicles blocking the roadway on Doctor’s Path near Ellen Street at about 9:27 a.m. on Oct. 12 when they were approached by a man later identified as Marcus Belcher, who reported he had just stabbed another man. Belcher was not connected to the original complaint, police said.
Additional 911 calls indicated an altercation had occurred at the 7-Eleven at 162 Old Country Road, police said. An investigation determined Belcher and another man were involved in a dispute during which Belcher allegedly stabbed the man in the knee with a knife and then broke a window of the victim’s vehicle with a baseball bat, police said.
Police said that as the victim attempted to leave in his vehicle, he struck Belcher’s vehicle, which was blocking his path, causing damage to both vehicles.
The victim sustained a laceration to his knee and refused medical attention, police said.
Belcher, 34, was charged with assault in the second degree and criminal mischief in the third degree, police said.
Police ask anyone with information about suspicious or criminal activity to call the Riverhead Police Department’s Crime Hotline at 631-727-3333. Calls will be kept confidential, police said.
Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. A person charged with a crime is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
