Updated- 10:30 a.m. A tornado watch is in effect in Suffolk and Nassau counties today until 3 p.m.
Strong thunderstorms are moving across the region this morning, according to a statement issued by the National Weather Service in New York at 8:19 a.m. The storms are packing winds in excess of 40 mph and bringing torrential rainfall that may lead to localized flooding, the weather service said.
Rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches, with localized amounts of 4 to 6 inches— with the possibility of 7 or more inches in some locations— are forecast.
A flood watch is also in effect through midnight.
The Town of Riverhead has closed all town parks and beaches for the day due to weather.
