A man struck by a vehicle while crossing West Main Street last night was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious injuries.
Police said the man was crossing the street in the area of the Riverhead Supermarket at 953 West Main Street shortly after 8:30 p.m. Sunday.
Responding patrol officers determined the man was struck by a 1998 Toyota Corolla operated by Telma Violeta Milian Mendoza, 54, of Flanders, according to a police press release issued overnight. The operator stayed at the scene and cooperated with police, according to the report.
Riverhead Town Police Detective Squad and the New York State Police Accident Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene to further the investigation.
West Main Street was closed between Raynor Avenue and Mill Road while police investigated the crash.
Mendoza was issued a summons for unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in violation of the State Vehicle and Traffic Law, police said.
Police did not identify the victim, whom they described only as a Hispanic male.
