Riverhead Police are investigating a fatal wrong-way, head-on collision on Route 105 last night.

A 1997 Honda Civic traveling northbound on Route 105 crossed over into the southbound lanes and collided head-on into a 2013 Lexus that was traveling southbound on the divided highway.

The driver of the Civic, Domingo Juan Francisco, 60, succumbed to his injuries at Peconic Bay Medical Center, police said.

The 61-year-old woman operating the Lexus was treated for non-life threatening injuries at Peconic Bay Medical Center, according to a police press release issued this morning.

Police said they were notified of the accident at approximately 8:35 pm. Anyone with any information
regarding the accident is asked to contact the Town of Riverhead PoliceDepartment at 631-727-4500.

Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Flanders/Northampton Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded, as did the Riverhead Fire Department, which assisted with extradition of the operators, who were the sole occupants of the vehicles, police said.

An investigation further revealed that the operator of the Honda was involved in a minor accident on Route 24 in Flanders and left the scene prior to this accident, according to the police report.

The Riverhead Detective Division and the New York State Police Accident Investigation Unit assisted with the investigation, which remains on-going at this time, police said.

Editor’s note: This story was updated after police released the name of the man killed in the accident, following notification of next of kin.
