State Assembly

The New York State Assembly is the lower chamber of the New York State Legislature, the upper chamber being the State Senate.  The assembly has 150 members, each representing an assembly district comprising roughly 130,000 residents.

Assembly Members are elected to two-year terms with no term limits, and the elections are held in even-numbered years. The base salary for state senators is currently $142,000 per year. In addition, they are entitled to per diem allowances for each day they are in session, plus travel reimbursements for travel related to their official duties, including mileage, tolls and other costs when they use their personal vehicles.

Currently 101 of the 150 assembly seats are held by Democrats.

Second Assembly District

New York’s Second Assembly District includes all of the Town of Riverhead, and portions of Southampton and Brookhaven towns. Its boundaries take in the north shore of Brookhaven Town west to Mount Sinai and dips south to take in the east-central Brookhaven Town communities of Manorville, Upton, part of Ridge and part of Remsenburg-Speonk. It also includes the Southampton hamlets of Northampton, Riverside and part of Flanders.

Politically, the district leans Republican. It is currently represented by Republican Jodi Giglio of Baiting Hollow, who was first to represent the Second Assembly District in 2020. She succeeded Anthony Palumbo, who vacated the seat to run for state senate in 2020 after seven years in office.

Giglio, 56, previously served three four-year terms on the Riverhead Town Board. She has lived in Baiting Hollow for 20 years and is a mother of three children. She grew up in Nassau County, attended Stony Brook University and owns permit expediting and construction management businesses.

She stresses her concerns for inflation relief, public safety, environmental protection and supporting veterans. Giglio says she is “pro-Second Amendment for law-abiding New Yorkers” and calls herself “very passionate about medical freedom” and is opposed to government mandates.

Tricia Chiaramonte of Manorville is the Democratic candidate on the ballot for the Second Assembly District seat, but she has not run an active campaign.
