Riverhead Police are investigating a motor vehicle accident on West Main Street late Friday afternoon that seriously injured a pedestrian.
Police said Bekim Zeqiri, 29, of Westhampton Beach was attempting to cross West Main Street in front of the Greenview Inn when he was struck by a car operated by Christine Velasquez, 51, of Riverhead at approximately 5:10 p.m.
Zeqiri, who suffered serious physical injuries, was treated at the scene by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps and then airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital by a Suffolk County Police helicopter, police said.
Velasquez was also treated at the scene and transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center with minor injuries, according to the report.
Riverhead Police detectives and the New York State Police Forensic Identification Unit responded to assist in the investigation.
The investigation at the scene determined that Velasquez was operating a 2021 Nissan Sentra westbound on West Main Street and struck Ziqiri, who was attempting to cross West Main Street from the south shoulder to the north shoulder, police said. There does not appear to be any criminality involved and no charges have been filed in connection with the accident, according to the police report.
