New York State has issued a statewide burn ban due to a continuing period of dry weather conditions.
Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced the ban yesterday due to increased fire risk and continued dry conditions. The ban took effect immediately and remain in effect to Oct. 15. It will be re-evaluated prior to expiration, the governor’s announcement said.
The ban prohibits outdoor fires for purposes of brush and debris disposal, as well as uncontained campfires and open fires used for cooking and recreation.
The ban does not apply to:
- Barbecue grills, maple sugar arches and similar outdoor cooking devices when used
for cooking or processing food. - Contained campfires less than 3 feet in height and 4 feet in length, width or diameter
if contained in a fireplace, hibachi or fire ring.
Currently, all of Long Island is considered at moderate risk of wildfires, while much of upstate and western New York are at high risk, according to the state’s fire danger map. The map is updated daily.
