Riverhead Faculty and Community Theatre presents “Oliver!” this weekend and next at Riverhead High School.
The popular musical, based on the Charles Dickens classic 1838 novel, “Oliver Twist,” tells the story of an orphan who escapes a workhouse and falls in with a gang of pickpockets in London, and later finds a benevolent guardian — only to be kidnapped by Fagin’s henchman, Bill Sikes. The musical score features well-known songs like “Food, Glorious Food,” “Consider Yourself,” “Oom-Pah-Pah,” and “As Long as He Needs Me”.
Created by the English writer and composer Lionel Bart, who wrote the book, music and lyrics, Oliver!, premiered in London in 1960 and on Broadway in 1963. The show received a Tony Award for Best Original Score, and the 1968 film adaptation of Oliver! won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
