Updated 6 p.m.: The Long Island Expressway exit 73 exit ramp is shut down and the eastbound lanes of Route 58 are closed to traffic between the expressway and Kroemer Avenue Friday evening. Westbound lanes of Route 58 are open.

Traffic on West Main Street (NY 25) is very heavy from the Exit 72 east exit to Kroemer Avenue Friday evening due to the closure of the exit 73 ramp and eastbound lanes of Old Country Road.

Old Country Road was shut down in both directions at Kroemer Avenue earlier today due to utility poles down in the roadway, according to the Riverhead Police Department. Motorists are urged to avoid the area while crews respond to the hazard.

Police also reported multiple other locations across Riverhead where trees and utility poles are leaning or where trees or wires are down in the roadway. These areas are considered hazardous and may be subject to temporary closures as conditions change.

Drivers are advised to use caution near the following locations:

  • Harrison Avenue near Delores Avenue
  • Edgar Avenue near Meeting House Creek Road
  • Penny’s Road in the area of 267 Penny’s Road
  • Reeves Avenue in the area of 735 Reeves Avenue

Officials are reminding residents to remain alert, obey any posted road closures, and allow emergency and utility crews space to safely complete repairs.
