A freeze watch is in effect for Long Island, including Riverhead and the East End, with subfreezing temperatures possible late Monday night into Tuesday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Upton.

The watch covers northwest, northeast, southwest and southeast Suffolk, as well as Nassau County, and is in effect from late Monday night through Tuesday morning. The weather service said temperatures could fall below 32 degrees.

Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation, the weather service said. Residents are urged to take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold.

The colder air arrives behind a cold front expected to move through Sunday, with temperatures falling into the 40s by Sunday afternoon, according to the weather service’s forecast discussion. High pressure then builds in early next week, setting up what forecasters said could be the coldest night of the period.

In Riverhead, the National Weather Service forecast calls for a low around 30 degrees Monday night, with a northwest wind around 7 mph. Tuesday is expected to be sunny with a high near 51 degrees.

A warming trend is expected to begin Wednesday, with temperatures trending closer to normal and then above normal later in the week, forecasters said.
