The National Weather Service has extended an extreme heat warning for Riverhead through 9 p.m. Saturday.
The warning is in effect town-wide, with heat index values expected to range from 105 to 110 degrees. Officials said the prolonged stretch of high temperatures has the potential to be a multi-day extreme heat event with near-record highs.
Residents are urged to stay cool by remaining indoors in air-conditioned areas or outside in shaded environments, limit outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, and check on vulnerable friends, family and neighbors.
In an emergency, dial 911. Anyone in need of assistance due to the heat can call the Riverhead Police Department at 631-727-4500.
