The auto dealerships that line Riverhead’s Route 58 commercial corridor are bracing for the impacts of 25% tariffs on imported autos and auto parts — though precisely what those impacts will be remains uncertain.

More than 110,000 Suffolk residents were unemployed in the month of July, according to data released last week by the New York State Department of Labor. Suffolk’s insured unemployment rate was 13.6% in July, more than a point higher than it was in June, according to the data.

The Riverhead Chamber of Commerce is pushing for the East End to be skipped through the second and third phases of New York's reopening plan and enter the fourth and final phase immediately, citing economic and health reasons for a full reopening sooner than planned by the state.

"Our economy is strong and growing stronger with an economic environment spurring considerable job growth and desperately needed opportunities for American workers."

Today's layoffs are the second phase of a “larger workforce restructuring plan,” the lab said in a statement. Sixty-three staffers were recently approved for buyouts.
