The Town of Riverhead celebrated the launch of its new residential food scrap recycling to compost program yesterday at the Youngs Avenue waste disposal site, another step in Riverhead’s ambitious goal to divert almost all the town’s food scrap waste from landfills by 2030.

Riverhead Town is conducting a pilot food scrap collection program, with the goals of providing material for composting to local farms and reducing greenhouse gas emissions to mitigate climate change.

Riverhead Town has taken a pledge to become a “climate-smart” community, joining seven other Suffolk County towns in a statewide program aimed at helping communities reduce greenhouse gas emissions, conserve energy and prepare to deal with the impacts of climate change.
