Phone scam

During the past month and half, at least five people — from Riverhead to Aquebogue, Calverton and Greenport — have been scammed by someone claiming to be a United States Citizenship and Immigration Services officer.

The New York State Tax Department warned residents today that that the Tax Department does not using its fraud hotline phone numbers for outgoing calls, and if those phone numbers appear on a caller ID, it's an “immediate signal” that the caller is a scam artist.
