Firefighters quickly knocked down a blaze at a house on Peninsula Path last night. A family of four was safely evacuated but one firefighter was taken to the hospital for treatment of a burn injury, the Riverhead fire chief said.

Riverhead firefighters are at the scene of a fast-moving fire on the second floor of a building on Pulaski Street this morning.

Fire tore through a long-abandoned house on Flanders Road in Riverside last night.

The five family members who died in the Nov. 16 fire on East Second Street in Riverhead were trapped in a front bedroom of the third-floor rental apartment, where they had apparently sought refuge from the flames that engulfed the home.

Riverhead's proposed rental code amendments include requirements for a second means of egress and sprinklers in homes with third-floor apartments — both of which were lacking in the home where a fatal fire killed five family members trapped in an apartment on the third floor. The proposed code had a public hearing last week.

If the town lacks the requisite resources or initiative to conduct the necessary investigation, Suffolk County or New York State must step in.

Riverhead firefighters made a quick stop of a working fire at the Home Depot store on Route 58 this afternoon. The fire started outside the building at the front of the store, Riverhead Fire Department spokesperson Bill Sanok said at the scene. It consumed lawn chairs stacked up outside the building against the front wall and spread to the exterior wall.

Suffolk County Police Arson Squad detectives are still investigating the cause of the deadly blaze that killed a family of five Nov. 16.

Breaking: Firefighters from at least three area departments are battling a blaze at a Calverton condominium complex.

Smoke detectors in a Jamesport home averted disaster when fire broke out in a sunroom early this morning, Jamesport Fire Chief Scott McKillop said.
