Riverhead firefighters made a quick stop of a house fire on Linda Lane East late last night. Jamesport and Flanders fire departments responded to assist.

Firefighters quickly knocked down a blaze at a house on Peninsula Path last night. A family of four was safely evacuated but one firefighter was taken to the hospital for treatment of a burn injury, the Riverhead fire chief said.

Riverhead's proposed rental code amendments include requirements for a second means of egress and sprinklers in homes with third-floor apartments — both of which were lacking in the home where a fatal fire killed five family members trapped in an apartment on the third floor. The proposed code had a public hearing last week.

If the town lacks the requisite resources or initiative to conduct the necessary investigation, Suffolk County or New York State must step in.

Riverhead firefighters made a quick stop of a working fire at the Home Depot store on Route 58 this afternoon. The fire started outside the building at the front of the store, Riverhead Fire Department spokesperson Bill Sanok said at the scene. It consumed lawn chairs stacked up outside the building against the front wall and spread to the exterior wall.
