A two-story home on Northville Turnpike sustained heavy damage in a fire early Wednesday morning.
The Riverhead Fire Department responded to an alarm for a residential structure fire at 954 Northville Turnpike at 6:21 a.m. Wednesday, according to fire department spokesperson Ed Carey.
Upon arrival, First Assistant Chief Sean Brennan found an active fire in the residence. No one was at home, Carey said.
No one was injured, but one firefighter was treated at the scene for heat exhaustion, Carey said.
The cause is undetermined and is under routine investigation by the Riverhead Police Department Detective Division, the Riverhead Fire Marshal’s Office and the Suffolk County Police Department’s arson squad, Carey said.
About 50 Riverhead firefighters responded with two engines, two ladder trucks and three support vehicles, Carey said. Flanders, Jamesport, East Quogue and Westhampton Beach fire departments responded to the scene in response to Riverhead’s call for mutual aid. The Eastport Fire Department stood by at Riverhead’s headquarters.
Firefighters were dismissed from the scene by about 8:30 a.m. and were called back about a half-hour later to deal with a smoldering hot spot at the house.
The structure fire followed two other calls overnight, one for a carbon monoxide alar, at Friar’s Head golf course at about 11 p.m. and another for a “fully involved commercial truck fire” on Kroemer Avenue at 1:12 a.m. About 50 fire fighters resounded to that call as well.
“It was a very busy night for Riverhead,” said Carey.
Correction: This article has been amended to correct an error in the reported time of the alarm at Friar’s Head, which was about 11 p.m., not 11 a.m.
