A car crash on County Road 111 in Manorville this morning claimed the lives of a 30-year-old woman and her 7-year-old son and critically injured the woman’s two other children, Suffolk County Police said.
Keri Trinca, of Manorville was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Her son Jason was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, where he succumbed to his injuries. Trinca’s two other children, ages four and two, were airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center, where they were admitted in critical condition.
The accident occurred at about 8:25 a.m. at the intersection of Oceanview Boulevard and County Road 111. Trinca’s 1998 Honda, eastbound on Oceanview, entered the intersection and collided with a southbound 2002 Ford E350 van driven by Steven Vonfricken, 51, of St. James.
Vonfricken and his passenger, Edward James, 50, of Smithtown, were transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment of non-lifethreatening injuries, police said.
Though only seven years old, Jason Trinca was a prize-winning go-kart racer who was a frequent participant in kart races at Riverhead Raceway.
The cause of the accident is under investigation, police said.
There is a traffic signal at the intersection and police are investigating to determine if one of the vehicles ran a red light, according to the Suffolk County Police Department public information office.
Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks, police said. No arrests were made or summonses issued, police said.
