Decomposed human remains were discovered in a Riverhead barn today by a groundskeeper checking on the property at Route 25 and County Road 105.

The body was badly decomposed, according to Riverhead police, who did not say whether it was believed to be male or female. Police did not say how long the body was thought to have been in the barn.

No foul play is suspected in the death, Riverhead police said.

The person appears to have been sleeping in the barn, said one police source. The building had not been checked by its owner in several months, according to the source.

The person who discovered the body called police at about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Riverhead police said in a press release. The Suffolk County Medical Examiner removed the body this afternoon, police said. An autopsy will be performed to attempt to identify the body and determine a cause of death, police said.

The investigation is ongoing.
