Meet Riverhead’s new K9 patrol dog, Rocky.
The German Shepherd was named after the late Riverhead Police Chief Roscoe “Rocky” Palmer.
Rocky met the Town Board at Tuesday’s regular monthly meeting, where members of the Riverhead Buildings and Grounds crew were presented with proclamations for building a new kennel for Rocky.
Members of Chief Palmer’s family, including his wife Helen, sons Dixon, Stephen (“Tim”), and Roscoe III and daughter Laura, were on hand for the presentation.
Rocky is Riverhead’s second K9 patrol dog. He replaces Bruno, longtime K9 patrol dog who was put down a year ago at age 10. Rocky was raised by Riverhead Police Officer and K9 handler John Morris, pictured with Rocky and members of Chief Palmer’s family outside Town Hall on Tuesday.
Chief Palmer served 37 years in the Riverhead Police Department, 11 years as its chief. He was also the longtime chairman of the board of the Suffolk County Police Association. The chief passed away on this date in 2009 at age 79.
