Following Riverhead’s 5-4 victory over Deer Park in the last game of the regular season on Wednesday, head coach Bob Fox said:

“I think we should get a home playoff game now after this win,” said Fox. “If we don’t get a home playoff game, something is wrong. All the teams in League III have worse records than us with the highest having 13 wins.

He was right.

Even though the Waves finished 3rd in League IV, the girls were still awarded a home game for the first round of the playoffs as the No. 8 seed in the AA bracket, squaring off against No. 9 Smithtown West Monday at 4 p.m.

Smithtown West played in League III this year, totaling a record of 13-6.

Riverhead played at Smithtown West in League III/IV crossover game on April 16, losing 5-4.

“It should be a really good game,” said Fox on Friday in a phone interview. “I’m glad it’s in Riverhead this time around so we can get the home crowd behind us. It’s going to be close, most likely another one run game.”

By the numbers:

No. 8 Riverhead (14-5)

Average runs per game: 7.4
Average runs allowed per game: 4.65

No. 9 Smithtown West (13-6)

Average runs per game: 5.78
Average runs allowed per game: 3.68
