A woman was airlifted following a crash with a school bus on County Road 51 just before 8 o’clock this morning.
The woman, the driver of a Cadillac sedan, was attempting to cross the divided highway when her car was T-boned by a northbound school bus, operated by Montauk Bus Company, on its way to the Riverhead Charter School.
The bus driver suffered minor injuries and was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center by Flanders Northampton Ambulance. The four children in the bus were not injured but transported to PBMC for evaluation.
The driver of the Cadillac sustained injuries police said were not life-threatening. She was conscious and alert at the scene. Riverhead Fire Department responded with a heavy rescue unit to extricate the woman from her vehicle. They also responded with an engine to secure a landing zone for the Suffolk Police helicopter called to transport the victim to Stony Brook University Hospital.
The accident investigation is ongoing, police said.
