To celebrate the end of “reading week” at Roanoke Avenue Elementary School, Principal Thomas Payton always does something wild to reward his students.

This year, five teachers poured buckets of artificial, brightly colored slime over his head on the auditorium’s stage.

Payton has been challenging his school to clock 75,000 collective minutes of reading time during reading week for the past 10 years. This year’s total number of reading week minutes – 119,000 – was “by far” the most the school has ever recorded for the challenge, Payton said.

“I am incredibly proud of all of you,” Payton told the assembly of cheering students before he allowed himself to get “slimed.”

The teachers from the five classes that recorded the most minutes of reading got to do the honors of pouring the buckets of slime over Payton’s head.2015_0313_slime_kids
