Volunteers are wanted to help with a downtown spring cleanup next Saturday, April 11.
The Riverhead Business Improvement and several downtown businesses are organizing the effort, said BID board member Bobby Hartmann.
Volunteers are asked to meet in the Peconic River parking lot near Robert James Salon at 9 a.m. to receive supplies.
“The whole downtown area needs cleaning,” said Hartmann, owner of Mainstream House. Hartmann organized a fall cleanup last year in which participants in East End Regional Intervention Court substance abuse program picked up leaves and litter up and down Main Street.
“This is something the whole community should get involved in,” Hartmann said. “Many hands make light work.”
Sponsors of next Saturday’s cleanup include Uncle Joe’s Pizzeria Cafe and Ralph’s Italian Ices. Volunteers will be rewarded with a complimentary slice of pizza and a fountain drink — and an Italian ice.
“The best part is the good feeling you get from doing something good for the town,” Hartmann said.
The cleanup is a perfect opportunity for residents who need community service hours, he noted.
