A car jumped a curb and drove onto a busy sidewalk at Tanger Outlets in Riverhead this afternoon, crashing into a brick column outside the Off Saks outlet store, narrowly missing pedestrians as well as the glass facade of the storefront.
The female driver of the Saturn station wagon appeared to have suffered a medical emergency, police said. She was taken by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance to Peconic Bay Medical Center. It was not immediately clear whether she sustained any injuries as a result of the accident.
“I have no idea how the car didn’t hit anyone. The sidewalk was crowded with people,” said a store employee who declined to give her name. “It’s amazing no one got hurt.” The accident occurred shortly before 2 p.m.
The Riverhead fire marshal was called to the scene to assess structural damage to the building.
