Tempted to use a handicapped parking space in a crowded lot this holiday season, even though you don’t have a permit? Keep driving.
The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office has stepped up enforcement efforts this holiday season to deter drivers who are not disabled from using spaces set aside for handicapped parking permit holders.
“You may be in a hurry to get your shopping done, but if you park in a handicapped parking spot and you are not disabled, you could face a stiff fine,” Sheriff Vincent DeMarco said.
The sheriff is asking for the public’s help in this effort. If you witness a potential violation, send the sheriff’s office an email at SheriffTips@suffolkcountyny.gov or via the “send email” button on the Sheriff’s Office’s official Facebook page @SuffolkSheriff. Please include the date of the incident, the time, and the exact location. Photos are also helpful. All tips will be kept completely confidential.
This enhanced enforcement effort will begin immediately and last through New Year’s Day.
