In a world where kindness seems to be ever shorter supply, fourth-graders at two Riverhead public schools want to spread kindness throughout the community.

“Kindness matters,” is the message they carry.

The Peacemakers of Phillips Avenue and Roanoke Avenue elementary schools invite the community to take the Great Kindness Challenge from Jan. 23 to 27.

In a video they created, the kids invite people of all ages and from all walks of life to perform random acts of kindness and post photos of them on social media — Facebook, Twitter or Instagram — using the hashtag #RiverheadKindness.

Be sure to also tag @RiverheadCap, which has been organizing and sponsoring the Great Kindness Challenge in Riverhead schools, under the direction of Riverhead CAP social worker Shannon Kutner since 2013.

In 2015, Riverhead was designated a Kindness Certified School District by Kids for Peace.

Are you up for the kindness challenge?

Smile at a stranger… hold open a door… pick up litter… hug a friend… bring in your neighbor’s empty trash can… leave someone a nice note… compliment someone… do a happy dance… make and display a “Kindness Matters sign.”

Need more ideas or inspiration? See the kindness checklist.

“The students are looking forward to community participation and can’t wait to see the kind acts,” Kutner said. “They have learned that when we are kind it creates a ripple effect and a culture of kindness.”

Help create a culture of kindness in our community. Take the Great Kindness Challenge next week.
