A woman and child were taken to Stony Brook University Hospital this morning following a head-on collision on Middle Country Road in Calverton at about 7:35 a.m.
A westbound Toyota pickup truck was waiting in the westbound lane to make a left turn into a business on the south side of the road when an eastbound Chevy Equinox “for reasons unknown at this time” crossed the double-yellow line and hit the pickup head-on, a police officer on the scene said.
The impact of the crash pushed the pickup into a Toyota minivan that was passing the pickup on the right, police said.
The injuries to the woman driving the Chevy SUV and her child passenger were not life-threatening, according to the police officer. The child, a 6-year-old boy, was appropriately restrained in the back seat, police said. The driver and a passenger in the minivan were not injured. It was not immediately clear whether the driver of the pickup was going to be transported to a hospital.
The two vehicles involved in the head-on crash were towed from the scene.
Middle Country Road (Rt. 25) was closed to traffic in both directions for just under an hour.
No further information was immediately available at the scene. Police said the accident remains under investigation.
