With spring on the way and warmer weather arriving, reconstruction work on the Riverside roundabout is scheduled to get underway again — “in a limited capacity,” according to the resident engineer on the project.
On Monday, contractors will begin working on drainage installation in the vicinity of Woodhull Avenue and eastbound County Road 94/Nugent Drive, engineer Michael Pelc said in an email.
Eastbound traffic on CR 94 will not be affected, Pelc said. There will be a short closure of Woodhull Avenue.
The work in this phase of construction will take place during daytime hours.
Work on the Riverside traffic circle, which began last May, shut down for the winter in December. Crews had completed work on Nugent Drive, including the drainage system, curb and sidewalk and base asphalt, according to an announcement by project engineers in December.
The traffic circle reconstruction, which carries a $5.25 million price tag, “will convert the existing five-legged, one-lane traffic circle into a modern two-lane roundabout to ease congestion and improve commuter safety,” Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said at the project groundbreaking last spring.
“It will also allow the county public works department to design and install a new storm sewer system to mitigate flooding issues and treat storm water before it is discharged into the Peconic River.”
The existing traffic circle was designed in 1937.
