Owners of the former Sports Authority store are seeking to divide the 45,085-square-foot building into three separate storefronts, which would house a Planet Fitness gym, a dollar store and an unnamed retail store, according to the site plan filed with the Riverhead planning department.
Planet Fitness is slated for the largest of the three storefronts, the 20,075-square-foot space in the center of the building.
Planet Fitness currently has a location on Kroemer Avenue in Riverhead. Originally opened by a Planet Fitness franchisee, it was one of six locations owned by the franchisee acquired by the corporate entity, Planet Fitness Inc., on Jan. 1, 2018. A Planet Fitness corporate spokesperson could not immediately be reached for comment.
A dollar store will occupy the 14,800-square-foot easternmost space. The site plan does not identify the name of the dollar store tenant. The third space, with no specific retail user indicated, is 10,210 square feet.
The Sports Authority store closed in 2016, after the retailer filed for bankruptcy that spring.
The Riverhead Planning Board has scheduled a public hearing on the division of the store for June 6 at 7 p.m. at Riverhead Town Hall.
