A rally for women’s rights and reproductive freedom has been scheduled to take place outside the State Supreme Court building in Riverhead on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

The rally is being organized by the Democratic committees of the five East End towns and will feature a number of elected officials, including Assembly Member Fred Thiele, County Legislator Bridget Fleming, Southampton Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman and town council members from Southampton and East Hampton towns.

Since the U.S. Supreme Court on Friday released its decision overturning Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pa. v. Casey, protests and rallies have taken place all over the country, including one in Port Jefferson Station on Saturday.

A 6-3 majority in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Center ruled that the right to an abortion is not protected by the U.S. Constitution, the essential holding of the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade case.

The rally in Riverhead on Wednesday will take place on Griffing Avenue in front of the courthouse steps.
