Two people were arrested early Monday morning in Calverton for allegedly operating a vehicle without permission and possessing property stolen from a Calverton home, according to Riverhead Town Police

Police said Anthony A. Brown, 21, and an adolescent offender, 17, both from the Bronx, were traveling in a 2018 Honda Accord in Calverton when they were observed on Riley Avenue “driving in a suspicious manner” with the vehicle’s headlights off. An officer attempted to perform a vehicle stop, but the vehicle fled from the officer for a short distance before colliding with a dirt embankment on Edwards Avenue, police said.

Police said the occupants fled the vehicle and were located a short distance away, arrested and transported to Riverhead Police Headquarters. Police said the vehicle was later determined to be “stolen and proceeds of a larceny from the Calverton area were recovered inside the vehicle.”

Police said the suspects were charged with Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Fourth Degree (a class E felony) under a subsection that makes it illegal to knowingly possess a stolen credit card, debit card or public benefit card; and Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle in the Third Degree (a class A misdemeanor) under a subsection that makes it illegal to use a vehicle without the owner’s consent.

Police said the investigation is still ongoing. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has any information are asked to call the Riverhead Police Department at 631-727-4500. All calls will remain confidential, police said.

Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. A person charged with a crime is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
