A 21-year-old Riverhead man was arrested on criminal mischief and attempted burglary charges by police responding to an automatic alarm at a Route 58 food store late last night.
Patrol officers responding to an audible alarm activated at European Foods, 637 Old Country Road in Riverhead, at 10:49 p.m. Friday observed a man walking away from the front door, Riverhead Police said in a press release. Officers saw that front door glass had been broken out. An officer detained the man near the scene without incident, police said.
The man, later identified as Jose Montes-Fuentes was arrested and taken to Riverhead Police Department headquarters where he was processed charges of Criminal Mischief in the Third Degree and Attempted Burglary in the Third Degree, police said.
Police determined that Montes-Fuentes had an outstanding arrest warrant from Riverhead Justice Court on a prior unrelated matter, according to the report. He was held overnight pending arraignment, police said.
