Hallockville Museum Farm has received a $500,000 grant award from New York State Council on the Arts to improve its historic Naugles barn.

The barn will be improved with accessible restrooms with an innovative alternative (I/A) septic system, which reduces the harmful nitrogen emitted by typical septic systems and is required by the Suffolk County Department of Health, according to a press release last month from Hallockville announcing the award.

Built in 1937, the Naugles barn has been restored over the years for use as a venue for weddings, parties and other events, according to Hallockville’s website.

“We are grateful to Governor Hochul and the New York State Council on the Arts for supporting Hallockville Museum Farm’s leadership role in providing authentic historic and cultural experiences,” Hallockville Executive Director Roberta Shoten said in a press release.

Other planned improvements to the barn will extend its availability for programming offered by Hallockville and other groups that had their activities constrained by seasonal and space limitations, according to the press release. Once the work on the barn is completed, it will be usable by the Hallockville Museum Farm, community groups and civic groups from early spring through late fall, according to the press release.

“We are grateful to Governor Hochul and the New York State Legislature for this fifth year of significant capital funding. This investment affirms the pivotal role the arts and culture play in our state’s economic prosperity,” NYSCA Executive Director Mara Manus said in the release. “A round of applause to Hallockville Museum Farm – your transformative project will ensure that our vibrant arts and cultural anchors continue to grow and thrive.”
