A 12-year old boy, with the assistance of a Southampton Town Police public safety dispatcher, delivered his aunt’s baby this morning at a house in Flanders this morning.

The boy, whom police did not identify, called 911 about his 22-year-old aunt in labor at about 10:15 a.m., police said in a press release.

He was later identified as Miguel Dominguez. See story at TuPrensaLocal.

Public Safety Dispatcher Christopher Brenner immediately began giving the boy clear instructions on how to help his aunt with the childbirth, police said.

While on the phone with Brenner providing birthing and medical instructions, the boy helped his aunt deliver a healthy baby boy.

Just as the baby was being born, Police Officer James Cavanagh arrived and assisted with the care of the mother and child until Flanders Northampton Volunteer Ambulance arrived shortly thereafter and took over care of the mother and child.

FNVA transported both mother and child to Peconic Bay Medical Center, where they are both resting and healthy, police said.

Police credited the boy’s “cool-headed actions” and the assistance of the dispatcher with the healthy delivery.
