Riverhead Police have charged a man with burglary and criminal mischief in connection with a break-in at a West Main Street office early this morning,

Police said they responded to the office of La Sala CPA at 313 W. Main Street in Riverhead in response to a commercial alarm activation at 3:27 a.m. today.

Responding officers found the front door to the business had been forced open, according to a press release issued this afternoon. While searching the business, officers located Jan Carlos Vargas, 36, of Mastic, inside the building, police said.

The owner of the business responded to the scene and reported a large amount of damage had occurred to his office equipment inside the building, according to the report. 

Riverhead Police detectives conducted an investigation. Vargas was charged with one count of Burglary in the Third Degree and one count of Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree, police said.

Vargas was processed and held for arraignment, police said.
