A new Shake Shack will open at Tanger Outlets in Riverhead next year, according to a company spokesperson.
The exact location of the restaurant and opening date were not immediately available, the spokesperson said in an email. The closest Shake Shack is currently in Lake Grove, although a slightly closer one in Selden, with a drive-thru, is expected to open this year.
Shake Shack is an American fast-casual food chain famous for its burgers and milkshakes. It started in New York City’s Madison Square Park as a hot dog cart in 2004, originally to raise money for a public art project. According to the first quarter 2025 financial report by the company, Shake Shack has more than 375 locations in the U.S. and more 210 overseas.
The Shake Shack’s opening was first reported by Greater Long Island as one of five new locations opening on Long Island in 2025 and 2026.
Early last year, the Riverhead Town Board adopted legislation to allow Tanger to expand the uses on the site, including allowing full-sized restaurants as an alternative to a food court. Tanger 2 has an established food court with several quick-service restaurants, while Tanger 1 has no restaurant or food court.
The zoning amendment also allows Tanger to bring in general retail stores, specialty markets, furniture showrooms and certain indoor and outdoor recreation; it also made it easier to create theaters.
