The operator of a motorcycle died following a collision with a truck on Center Drive near the intersection with West Main and Court streets Tuesday afternoon.
Riverhead Police said Aiden J. Lomelle, 18, of Whitestone, Queens, the operator of a 2022 Honda motorcycle, succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash, which took place at about 2:22 p.m. yesterday.
The motorcycle changed lanes and stopped in close proximity to the front of a northbound 2022 Kenworth commercial truck waiting at a red light on Center Drive, Riverhead Police said in a press release last night, reporting the results of a preliminary investigation. The motorcycle stopped in front of the truck just before the light turned green for traffic on Center Drive, police said. The truck, starting from a stop, collided with both the motorcycle and a 2017 Honda sedan that was attempting to follow behind the motorcycle, according to the report.
Lomelle was transported by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Peconic Bay Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries, police said.
The driver of the truck and the driver of the sedan were uninjured, according to the police report.
The accident appears to be non-criminal in nature, police said.
Portions of West Main Street and Center Drive were closed for several hours for an investigation of the accident by the Riverhead Police Detective Squad, the New York State Police Accident Reconstruction Team, and the New York State Police Motor Carrier Unit.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Riverhead Police Department at 631-727-4500 ext. 312.
