A Riverhead man is facing a felony assault charge as a result of the crash on Route 58 last night, Riverhead Police said in a press release this afternoon.

Police said Tyryk Lewis, 28, intentionally drove his Jeep into a motorcycle operated by a Michael McCann, 60, of Sag Harbor, causing serious injuries.

McCann was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital by a Suffolk County Police helicopter and remains in critical condition, according to the report.

Lewis and McCann had been involved in an ongoing dispute, according to an investigation by the Riverhead Police Department Detective Squad, police said in the press release.

Lewis was driving the Jeep eastbound on Route 58 when he struck McCann’s Honda motorcycle at approximately 6:58 p.m. between Oliver Street and Ostrander Avenue, police said.

Lewis’ passenger in the Jeep, identified by police as Rita Stumpf, 39, who police said is an undomiciled female in the Riverhead area, was charged with  Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Seventh Degree, after being found in possession of crack cocaine, according to the police report.

Both Lewis and Stumpf were arrested on the stated charges.

Route 58 between Oliver Street and Ostrander Avenue was closed to traffic in both directions for about four hours.  See prior story.

The Riverhead Police Detective Squad, with assistance from the New York State Police Accident Reconstruction Team, is continuing the investigation.
