Thomas R. Lavinia of Southold died on Nov. 8, 2025, at home. He was 74 years old.
Born in Smithtown, Tom attended Smithtown High School, where he excelled in football, basketball, and weight events, earning a place in the Sports Hall of Fame. He was named All Suffolk County and All Long Island in football and was recruited by more than 50 colleges and universities, ultimately choosing Penn State. He spent two years as a defensive tackle at Penn State and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in education. He later earned a master’s of education in supervision from Rider University.
Tom taught ceramics at Central Bucks High School East for 16 years, where he also coached football, track, and girls’ basketball. He then served as the assistant principal at Klinger Middle School in the Centennial School District for 14 years. Upon retirement, he used his home renovation skills to assist others, especially his family. As a member of the Lansdale United Methodist Committee on Relief team, he participated in relief efforts in Mississippi, Iowa, and Georgia. An avid fisher, he enjoyed fishing in various locations, including Pulaski, Massachusetts, and the Florida Keys. His family said he was happiest when helping others and will be remembered for his generous spirit.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Charlene; his sons, Troy (Arin) and Matt (Erika); and four grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Robert of Paradise Valley, Arizona, and Edward of Hackettstown, New Jersey.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Bucks County Opportunity Council or the Center for Advocacy, Support & Transformation. A private celebration of life will be observed at a later date. DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold is serving the family.
