Spicy's Barbecue at 225 West Main Street in Riverhead, which closed in June 2022, is torn down on Jan. 21, 2026. RiverheadLOCAL/Peter Blasl

The iconic West Main Street building that was home to Spicy’s Barbecue Restaurant in Riverhead for 44 years, is being torn down today.

The family-owned classic barbecue joint, which opened in the steel-clad dining car in 1978, shut its doors for good in June 2022.

Dee Muma, who bought the one-acre site on the Peconic River in 2012, said after the restaurant closed that the building would likely be removed due to its condition.

Muma could not immediately be reached for comment Wednesday afternoon.

Spicy’s was founded in Riverhead by Terry Stoner, who hailed from Indiana, according to a 1991 New York Times review.  His son Rick and daughter Josie, ran the Riverhead restaurant, while another son ran a second restaurant, “Spicy’s Birdland,” in Bellport, which opened two years after the Riverhead location.
