A dense fog advisory is in now in effect for Long Island through 11 a.m. Sunday, with visibility dropping to a quarter-mile or less in some locations, according to the National Weather Service in Upton.
Forecasters said areas of dense fog redeveloped early Sunday after visibility briefly improved late Saturday. The weather service attributed the fog to a “cold wedge” remaining in place as a warm front struggled to lift north, with light winds limiting mixing near the surface.
Low visibility could make driving hazardous. The weather service advises motorists to slow down, use headlights and leave plenty of distance between vehicles.
Fog and any light showers should become less of an issue later this morning as the front moves through, with conditions expected to improve into the afternoon. High temperatures are expected to reach the mid- to upper 50s, with partial clearing possible later in the day, the weather service said.
Drivers are urged to slow down, use headlights and leave plenty of distance between vehicles, the weather service said.
