Riverhead Elks honored winners of its annual Flag Day Essay Contest during Flag Day ceremonies at the lodge Sunday afternoon.

Students in the first through fifth grades in Riverhead schools are asked to write an essay about the U.S. flag. Winners are awarded cash prizes.

First, second and third grade winners

1st place: Luke Milano, 3rd grade, Aquebogue, Ms. Cipriani

2nd place: Daniel Penafiel, 3rd grade, Riley Avenue, Mrs. Menis

3rd place: Emelyn Carreta Perez, 3rd grade, Riley Avenue, Mrs. Menis

4th place: Laila Hendrickson, 3rd grade, Riley Avenue, Mrs. Menis

4th place: Nahla Brown, 3rd grade, Riley Avenue, Mrs. Menis

Fourth and fifth grade winners

The annual ceremony includes a short history of the U.S. flag and the display of previous flags used by the U.S. prior to the official adoption of the flag on June 14, 1777.
