A frost advisory is in effect for northeast Suffolk and southeast Suffolk counties through 9 a.m. Saturday, according to the National Weather Service in Upton.
Temperatures are expected to fall into the mid-30s overnight, with some locations potentially dropping to 25 to 30 degrees in parts of the Long Island Pine Barrens, the weather service said. Those conditions are expected to lead to frost formation late tonight into early Saturday morning.
The advisory was issued at 10:33 p.m. Friday as forecasters expanded frost advisories into eastern Suffolk.
Frost can harm sensitive outdoor vegetation, and tender plants may be killed if left uncovered, the weather service said. Residents should take steps now to protect plants from the cold.
The weather service said high pressure building in from the north will bring mainly clear skies and light winds, allowing for radiational cooling overnight.
Saturday is expected to be partly sunny, with areas of frost possible before 9 a.m. and a high near 61, according to the forecast.
Forecasters said similar temperatures are expected late Saturday night into early Sunday morning, and another round of frost advisories is likely for the same general areas.
